“Cannabis producer” means different things on either side of the border. In Canada, a licensed producer (LP) is a company holding a federal licence from Health Canada under the Cannabis Regulations — standard or micro cultivation, standard or micro processing, nursery, and a sales licence for medical cannabis — and the same company can hold several. Health Canada publishes the full list of licence holders, but it is a regulatory register, not a business directory: it tells you a licence exists, not what the company grows, which brands it sells, or whether it exports. In the United States there is no federal licence; cultivators are licensed state by state, and the largest operate greenhouses or indoor facilities in California, Oregon, Michigan and the Northeast, often alongside their own manufacturing and retail.

What is a licensed producer (LP) in Canada?
A licensed producer is a company holding a federal cannabis licence issued by Health Canada under the Cannabis Act and Cannabis Regulations. Licence classes include standard and micro cultivation, standard and micro processing, nursery, and a sales licence for medical cannabis. Most of the companies on this page hold standard cultivation, processing and medical sales licences; adult-use product then moves through the provincial wholesalers (OCS, SQDC, AGLC, BCLDB and others) rather than being sold directly to consumers.
Where can I find the Health Canada list of licensed cannabis producers?
Health Canada maintains a public list of licence holders (the “Licensed cultivators, processors and sellers of cannabis under the Cannabis Act” page on canada.ca), searchable by company name, licence class and province. It shows the legal entity, licence type and address, but not the company’s brands, facility size, or whether it is still commercially active — several licence holders are in CCAA proceedings or have paused operations. This directory covers the operating companies and links to their own sites.
Who are the largest cannabis producers in Canada?

What is the difference between a cultivator, a processor and a producer?
A cultivator grows the plant and sells dried or fresh cannabis; a processor turns cannabis into extracts, edibles, vapes and packaged products; “producer” is the general term for a company that does either or both under licence. In Canada these are separate licence classes and many LPs hold both. In the U.S. the split is similar at state level — cultivation, manufacturing and distribution licences — and vertically integrated operators hold all of them. Some companies on this page, such as MediPharm Labs, are processors that buy biomass rather than grow it.
Do Canadian licensed producers export cannabis internationally?
Yes. Several LPs export dried flower and extracts for medical use to Germany, Australia, Israel, the UK and other markets, which requires an EU-GMP or equivalent certification and a Health Canada export permit for each shipment.
