Luna Technologies

Luna Technologies builds hydrocarbon extraction equipment at 866 North Columbia Boulevard in Portland, Oregon. The company says its founders began extracting cannabis oil for medical use in 2012, found the available equipment inadequate, and built their own, borrowing ideas from aerospace, oil and gas, and pharmaceutical engineering. The result was the IO Extractor, introduced in 2017. Luna reports that in August 2019 it received a Canadian Registration Number, which it describes as a first for a hydrocarbon extraction equipment maker. The site does not give a founding year for the company or describe its ownership.

The IO is a patented, automated closed-loop system that Luna rates at 375 pounds a day of dried plant material or 700 pounds of fresh-frozen material. The larger Oberon is rated at 750 and 1,400 pounds, with about 90 seconds of downtime between runs. PureFlowN2, a closed-loop nitrogen assist that Luna says speeds solvent recovery and lowers extraction temperatures, is standard on new IO and Oberon systems and sold as a retrofit. Luna describes its extractors as GMP-qualifiable, built to California, Oregon and Washington fire codes, and peer reviewed for use in all 50 states and Canada.

Accessories include a horizontal biomass packer that presses loose material into 8-inch pucks from a 10-pound hopper, and an inline color remediation column built to ASME B31.3 that mounts on the IO frame. An online store sells filter media, flow controllers, parts and consumables. Extractors are sold by quote, and Luna does not publish system pricing. Its Lifetime Partner Program includes remote troubleshooting through an internet connection to the customer's extractor, and the site hosts webinars, process guides and a whitepaper.
